It results in a nonuniform distribution that can burn some phosphors within a week or two. This problem has been known and reported to Sun since they first came out with the "Life" lockscreen_default, years ago. The built-in pattern (one bouncing Sun logo) doesn't cause the problem. (Running screenblank as a standard part of rc.local would help too.)
