The !* history mechanism expands to the zero'th word if the previous line was a single word. It should expand to the null string in that case. Suggestions: 1) add a prompt string code similar to \w that just includes the basename of the current directory (the last part after the final /). 2) provide a mechanism to rebind keys on the fly, .inputrc is nice but I would like to able to do this from the shell.
