Mark,
     I had trouble building gnu-emacs on my hp9000s300 system as well.  My
problem lie in the fact that the series 300 c compiler takes the -L switch
as "-L dir" (note that space between the -L and the dir).  The src/Makefile
has it as normal (ie, "-Ldir").
