We're running GNUemacs 18.55 on a VAXstation 3200 running Ultrix 3.0
with the DEC X server, Xqdsg.  The inverse-video variable has no
effect on the emacs session, i.e.

	(setq inverse-video t)

		and
	(setq inverse-video nil)

both cause normal video display.  The inverse-video variable has the
desired effect on standard CRT terminals.
