Simicich) Organization: Nick Simicich, Peekskill, NY Lines: 91 Well, a week ago, I posted asking people to send me their preferences for a name to the group that I had proposed. I recieved 30 votes through the mail, 27 of which were more or less in the format I requested. A couple of people picked the name they liked from the list, and sent me email with just that name, indicating that they didn't want any other name. A couple of other people gave me their first couple of preferences, and then gave me nothing for the remaining votes. Because of this, I changed the way I counted votes slightly. One thing that I did was that I allowed for fractional votes. If a person had voted for two separate categories at the same level, I allowed a proportional fractional vote in each non-eliminated category. And if the vote was equal to the highest number voted by that voter, I did not transfer it nor count it in the tally. This was done in a vote counting program that I wrote, having received none in the mail. As it turned out, neither of these things mattered in this case. Fractional votes did not come up, and rec.sport.pro-wrestling won outright, having gotten more than 1/2 the first place votes as a first choice. But the program is written. To illustrate the STV, I'll ask the program to give me a 99% majority: $ stv .99 categ votes Total vote count is 31, more than 30.69 votes required to win. rec.sport.wrestling 8.00 8.00 8.00 8.00 rec.sport.pro-wrestling 20.00 20.00 21.00 23.00 31.00 rec.arts.wrestling 1.00 1.00 rec.arts.pro-wrestling 2.00 2.00 2.00 rec.sport.wwf 0.00 $ In English: No one voted for rec.sport.wwf, so that was the first category eliminated. On the second round, rec.arts.wrestling, with only one vote, was eliminated. That person's second choice was rec.sport.pro-wrestling, so the vote was transferred to that category. The next category to go was rec.arts.pro-wrestling, with 2 votes. One of those people's second choice was rec.sport.pro-wrestling, so that vote transferred directly. The other's second preference was rec.arts.wrestling, but that category was already eliminated, and their third preference was rec.sport.pro-wrestling, so the vote transferred there. In the same manner, votes from rec.sport.wrestling transferred. The 31 total matches the number of votes cast, indicating that rec.sport.wrestling was no one's last choice. Examination of the raw vote data indicates that, in fact, it was no worse than third for anyone. I believe that this represents a consensus on the name of the group. Providing that there is no major dissent, I'm going to issue a call for votes on Monday. The raw vote data. See if you count it the same way I do. 1 3 2 4 5 uunet!samsung!schizo!mailrus!wuarchive!East.Sun.COM!evan (Evan Marcus (Sun NJ Systems Consultant)) 2 1 2 2 2 Tom Griffin 1 2 3 4 37 RICKENBACH 4 1 3 2 5 uunet!pyrdc!eliot!reidc (Reid Carson/Development) 2 1 3 4 5 J Menes 1 2 3 3 3 Shane Rollans 2 1 4 3 5 dciem!cognos!larryw (Larry Williams) 5 1 3 2 4 uunet!mtsu.edu!csjoey (mr. joey carruthers) 5 3 2 1 4 uunet!solsta.ericsson.se!etxtsg (Thomas Grennefors) 5 1 4 2 3 tim@ncrcan.Toronto.NCR.COM 4 1 3 2 5 uunet!jarthur!jbillone 4 1 2 3 5 Herb Kunze 3 1 3 2 3 Bengt Larsson 1 3 2 4 5 CONTICELLO 3 2 1 4 5 heath@astro.as.utexas.edu (James Heath) 1 2 3 4 5 Scott Davis 2 1 4 3 5 hearth@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Don Hearth) 2 1 4 3 5 uunet!ccird4!rlgvax!lab (NY JETS Head Coach) 3 1 4 2 5 "Tony R.
