Think of the newsgroups not as a distinct wall but as a list of 
keywords chosen from a fixed list that help people determine if they 
are interested in a thread.  As long as a thread remains of interest 
to these people its "keywords" should remain intact.  

In my opinion, when you respond you should be presented with the list 
of newsgroups and the question "Is this discussion still of interest to
these groups?".
