I had a few useful replies and a lot of requests from others interested in any answers I received. I thought therefore that I would post what I've got so far. Firstly, J. Rogers, University of Utah [ROGERS@EDU.UTAH.ARSUN], posted me a program he coded from one of Nei's logarithms for dealing with restriction enzyme data. This is primarily to use estimates of level of base substitution, between DNA samples, obtained from RE data to construct phylogenies. Although this is useful to me for other purposes, it was not exactly what I had in mind. Ambis Systems, Inc, 33939 Ruffin Rd., San Diego, CA 92123 [VISLA@EARN.UMDC], posted me details of a "Pattern matching - Microbiology" program, constructed for their AMBIS scanner for automatic reading of gels and autorads, that sounds like it may be just what I had in mind. They said that it would be released December 1 and that the software and hardware would be available separately. I wrote to them for details but have yet to receive a reply - so if you're out there AMBIS -when can we have the program and how much does it cost? While we're waiting for Ambis to come up with the goods, I've given the problem to a final year student here who is having a go at writing a program. If it works, I'll post it - so you better get that program out soon Ambis! Johnjoe McFadden Department of Microbiology University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, UK.
