Basically, the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) specifically prohibit the use *any* passenger-carried electronic devices aboard an aircraft, except for a limited few things, like electric shavers, tape cassette players, etc. Anything that receives and/or transmits is deemed to be a possible source of interference for the sensitive navigation and communication systems on board the aircraft.
