For all of you who report problems with the HP9000/300 HP-UX 6.5 cc optimizer
(-O flag):  There is a patch available that fixes all(?) problems with
the compiler optimizer.  Ask your HP contact person.  We did and got it
the next day.  Several programs that didn't run OK with th original
6.5 cc -O now do.  I assume this patch has been applied to the HP-UX 7.0
cc for the 300s.
