I am trying to install CommonTeX 2.9 on a Sun-3 (I'm a relative
novice) and hit a snag. I ran initex thusly
	%initex
	**plain
	*\dump
	...

with no errors producing plain.fmt
Next I tried to run virtex

	% virtex \&plain.fmt
	This is Common TeX, Version 2.9 (no format preloaded)
	Sorry, I can't find that format, will try PLAIN.
	(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)                   
	%

What's wrong?
