I don't think this has anything to do with Motif. In my experience, you can
solve this problem by (1) not using scrollbars on xterm; (2) using the
xterm provided on the X11r3 tape. This is an client(X11r2)-->server(X11r3)
incompatibility due to a change in the protocol. (so much for backward
compatibility)....
