I will take a stab at your problem. When upgrading from HP-UX 6.2 to 6.5, HP added a couple new global symbols to crt0.o. GNU Emacs 18.55 has the necessary symbols defined in crt0.c to avoid undefined symbol messages from ld. Earlier versions lacked these symbols.
