We are currently addressing two problems. 1) How to provide continuing education to a large number of people without having to move the people to the classroom or cause a major impact on on-going efforts. And 2) how to increase our ability to teach software engineering. In a somewhat loosely coupled effort we are addressing both issues. We will begin in Jan to develop 5 short (two week classes) is software engineering based on the SEI MSE outline. Prior to the start of development all instructors will be taking a class on "instructing" the class on instructing is being specially designed to put emphasis on distance learning. Factors in the class should cover preparing slide (graphs) that project well on tape or through video teleconferencing systems. Also important will be working on the instructors to deal with cameras, develop concise lectures to maximize use of time, and hopefully dealing with delayed question periods. The class is still being developed and has never been tried by us so success is unknown. During the six month development period for the software engineering classes (at the SEI) every effort will be made to focus on dealing with distance learning by working with their (the SEI's) Video Dissemination Project. Again, while all initial offerings are intended to be in classroom envrin. we have a mandate to focus on distance learning. Some thing we have never developed a class (from scratch) to account for. The second part of the effort focuses purely on distance learning. First via video tapes, then via video teleconferencing. Pilot efforts will be management centered (Total Quality Management type). The first expected "real" test of the effort will be to offer the five software engineering courses through this media, hopefully at some future unknown date when both efforts are ready. I would be interested in any information that is passed to the original poster, and be interested in the posters plans for development. By the way our student base is all working adults.
