With GNU Emacs 18.55 on a Sun 3, SunOS 4.0.3, when I try
M-x shell
I always get:

Loading shell...done
Process shell exited abnormally with code 1

Can anyone give me a guess as to what's causing this problem?
SHELL environment variable is /bin/csh, ESHELL is not defined.
