For example, you might not get an answer from postmaster@arbitrarymachinename.hig.hawaii.edu, but you will get a reply if you query postmaster@hig.hawaii.edu (me), or postmaster@hawaii.edu. Another thing worth trying, if you're on the Internet, is "finger @somewhere" which actually seems to work most of the time.
