What should happen after AT D 8459311 is that the modem goes off hook, dials, negotiates with the modem you're trying to connect to, and, once successful, reports CONNECT 2400. At this point YOU must "wake up" the login-prompter of the system you've just successfully reached -- perhaps with one or more 's, or -M 's, or -J 's, or -C 's, or whatever you usually use to wake up the port selector on a hard-wired terminal. Otherwise, the system you've reached will time out and drop the line. Indeed: The garbage string you see after about 30 seconds is the line noise your modem demodulates before it realises the line HAS been dropped, after which it announces NO CARRIER. As to set-up of the 950, just try not to be in Block Mode, try not to be Local/ Off Line, and try not to be in Local Echo mode. In the Televideo 925 emulation of an HP 700 series terminal I have, there's no problem connecting with the Wesleyan VAX just as outlined above (though I use only the 2-2, 3-3, and 7-7 cable connections, with no shunting at either end of 6-8-20 or 4-5 or the like) -- but the VAX here isn't capable of permitting the 925 to use the EVE (TPU) screen-level editor -- the 925 doesn't understand the vt100 ANSI terminal escape sequences EVE depends on. So it's line editing only on that terminal. Hope this helps. -- Fred > I also tried: > modem: 1 2 3 4 5 7 6 (8) 20 > | | | | | | | | | > | | | ----- | ---------- > | | | | | > TeleVideo: 1 2 3 7 20 > > The result was same, but the TR panel light(terminal ready) on the modem was on. > > > The following is the pin assignments of modem, hope this helpfull for Y'all > to gave me further suggestions. > > Pin # Circuit Description Direction > ------------------------------------------------------------------- > 1 AA protect ground ... > 2 BA transmit data TO modem > 3 BB receive data FROM modem > 4 CA request to send TO modem > 5 CB clear to send FROM modem > 6 CC data set ready FROM modem > 7 AB signal return ... > 8 CF carrier detect FROM modem > 12 CI select alternate FROM modem > 15 DB transmit clock(synch) FROM modem > 17 DD receive clock(synch) FROM modem > 20 CD data terminal ready TO modem > 22 CE ring indicator FROM modem > 23 CI select alternate rate FROM modem > 24 DA transmit clock(DTE source) TO modem > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > (DTE: Date Terminal Equipment) > > Follows Antek's suggestion, I can setup TeleVideo terminal(MDL950) by > arrows and 't'key.
