If you have configured the spooler to spool to a particular printer, ##can users then choose to bypass the spooler ? (say they were spooling ##to their local hard disk using the background printing option) At the Print Server console, you can choose in the OPTIONS dialog for each printer whether or not to allow Bypass. If you turn it on, users may bypass the spooler and print directly to the printer. ##2. If the answer to 1 is 'yes', then does a user who chooses to bypass ##the spooler get a genuine direct connection to the printer or does the ##spooler still act as an intermediary between the user's mac and the ##printer? Genuine direct connection. ##3. Can the server and the printer it's spooling to be in different ##zones? I have not actually tried this, but I believe that the software will allow you to capture a printer in a different zone. This would probably generate quite a bit of traffic over whatever bridge you are using to separate the zones, and therefore doesn't seem like a good idea. ##4. Is there any way for users to inspect (but not alter) the printer ##queues? Not without extra software of some sort. I've had good luck with Timbuktu from Farallon Computing. This software enables you to either view or control the server machine from a workstation on the network. You could set up Timbuktu so that users would have the ability to view a replica of the server's screen at their individual mac, but not have the ability to control it. There might be an issue of network traffic here, depending on the number of worksations which would be using Timbuktu simultaneously. ##5. How much memory does the spooler require in the server, say to ##spool to 3 LaserWriters? ## I think it only requires 1 Mb, but if this server is responsible for three LWs, and at the same time is expected to perform file service, 2 Mb (or more depending on the number of users) may be in order. ##Thanks to those who have time to respond, ##Ron Haines ##haines@usage.csd.unsw.oz.au Chris Krohn chris@nuacc.acns.nwu.edu Brought to you by Super Global Mega Corp .com
