I'm fairly sure that the released 4.3 (and 4.3tahoe) versions of the telnet server put the tty in raw mode (or some such thing) when going into binary mode. So, vendor X is right in that they are doing what 4.3 does. However, that is the wrong thing to do (I sort of wrote that code, or at least was responsible for it at the 4.3 time). Dave Borman's newest telnet server (I'm pretty sure) fixes this bug. This version is available from arpa.berkeley.edu in the pub directory (along with client telnet). This version runs on 4.3.
