I have a slow (65ms access time) hard drive, with diskperf results like 140Kb/sec, and I find directory listings to be of acceptable speed. A 100-file directory listing is quite quick. (I use "ls" version 3.1.) And finding a particular program in my 8-directory, ~400-file search path is instantaneous.
