(A) The PAGER option of /bsd4.3/usr/ucb/mail does not work. If within mail one says & set crt=6 & set PAGER=/bin/cat then tries to read a mail item of more than 6 lines, one gets the error messages csh: Permission denied (stream manager/IOS) error: operation attempted on unopened stream (the second message appears only if APOLLO_STATUS is set in the environment). My login shell *is* csh. However, the "csh: Permission denied" message is the same even if I run mail from sh, or if I redefine the environment variable SHELL to be /bin/sh. Of course, I would really like to use crpad or something better rather than cat, but it doesn't seem to make any difference what PAGER program one asks for. (This was APRed on 22 August as 23FBB4A4, but the Sydney office seems to have lost it; I have resubmitted it but maybe the net will provide a quick answer.) (B) How do you get sendmail to accept two or more usernames as the value of an alias? I tried putting the line postmaster: root, jimr in the aliases file, then running newaliases. If I then send mail to postmaster, using /usr/ucb/mail with "set verbose" on, I see the following: postmaster... aliased to root, jimr root... Connecting to .local... root... Sent and that's all: it know about the dual alias, but doesn't send to jimr. What's more, it doesn't simply send to the FIRST username: if the alias is postmaster: jimr, root it STILL sends to root but not jimr! Thanks in advance for any help on these problems. (Thanks also to all who replied to my request for a program to run the DM editor from a process. I will post a summary shortly.) -- Jim Richardson Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia ACSNET: jimr@summer.su.oz Internet: jimr%summer.su.oz.au UUCP: ...!uunet!munnari!summer.su.oz!jimr "What do you mean by busting in here like a walrus and gumming up our wedding?" -- D.
