I didn't know they were making Imagewriters back then. I thought the Imagewriter came out in 1984 or so as THE printer for the Macintosh. (Never mind that it's also a great printer for the II!) I'm no hardware expert, but it sounds like you have some sort of glitch. You might try feeling the printer to see how warm it gets. Is it running hot? Heat affects RAM in a negative way, so excessive heat might change a bit here and there in the print buffer. These glitches happen to manifest themselves as printer control codes. Another possibility is that one or more chips might just be bad. A bad ROM could change print styles as it sees fit. Who knows, maybe even the driver circuits for the print mechanism are shot.
