I find it 100% compatible with a serial ImageWriter. It is also quieter than the ImageWriter. I have not had ANY problems with paper jamming. The only disadvantages that I have discovered are: Narrower carriage: Max paper width: 9.5" (8.5" with perf edges) Serial only: there is no AppleTalk option The exterior plastic appears to be more fragile than the ImageWriter's I have not thrown it across the room or dropped it to test this observation.
