Each year this panel, organized by the National Research Council, selects recipients of the NSF Graduate Fellowships in Computer Science. This is typically a 2 1/2 day commitment in Washington, D.C., in early February. In the past, in spite of NRC's efforts, and in contrast to other disciplines, representation by senior members of our community has been poor. We feel this is bad for two reasons. First, experience and perspective is needed for the main job of the panel --- distinguishing between outstanding applicants and outstanding applicants who deserve NSF Fellowships. Second, at a time when Computer Science is seriously underfunded, it sends a poor signal to NSF. In the face of the many demands on your time, we hope you will respond positively if invited to participate.
