                   CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

                            Computers and Writing III
                               Edinburgh, Scotland
                                6th-7th April 1990


        DATE FOR SUBMISSION OF TITLES AND ABSTRACTS (MAX  150  WORDS):  15
        JANUARY 1990.

        This conference aims to cover current research in the  design  and
        development  of  tools  for  writing,  the  evaluation  of writing
        software and writing programmes, computers and technical  writing,
        and  applications  of  computers  and  writing  in  education  and
        commerce.

        Papers are invited on the following topics:

                - the design of software for writers
                - teaching and training writers by computer
                - cognitive models of writing
                - uses of hypertext in writing
                - interactive fiction
                - story generation
                - computer-based discourse modelling
                -  computers and technical writing
                - evaluations of writing software


        Papers in CAL, CALL, HCI and NLP which are concerned with  writing
        will also be considered.

        Software demonstrations  and  workshops  will  be  welcomed.   The
        conference  will  coincide  with  the  2nd  International  Science
        Festival, held in Edinburgh and it is  hoped  to  mount  a  public
        exhibition of computers and writing software.

        As with this year's event, the organisers expect  to  publish  all
