Thanks to those who helped me, including a couple of phone
calls. To sumarize: I needed to recompile the kernal
to remove the "soft carrier" flags from those tty entries
where modems were to exist. Although I RTFM'd, I didn't think
such a radical step needed to be taken, so I read the wrong FM.
To those who simply told me to RTFM again, insert a snappy
come-back here.
