The catch is, my environment is the CMU shell mode of GNU Emacs. So, this is not a problem with Bash 1.04, but rather a problem of shell-running mode in GNU Emacs (the same problem occurs with M-x shell). It is very curious how these shell modes in Emacs seem to hold the output of the shell until an external command (something to do with standard error output processing?).
