The -j option instructs our Multimax as to use 32-bit branch
displacements instead of 16-bit ones.  With any luck GAS doesn't need
this.

This indicates that you may have another problem; I think that the GCC
configuration for the Multimax changes the assembler output to match
our syntax which may not be accepted by GAS.
