Would anyone be kind to provide good sources (books, articles,
papers...) for how one should approach the problem of designing a
numbering or identification scheme say for a small church library
system (15,000 books).  I am interested if it would discuss the
benefits and drawbacks of several techniques regarding flexibility,
uniqueness, readability, compactness, popularity of these
serialization schemes.
