Regarding the request for scanners for A4 documents at 300dpi:

Fujitsu makes a number of different scanners.  Two models that we
use here and seem to be good are the Fuji M3096E, which handles
documents as large as A4, A3, 11x17" and more, and the slightly
smaller model M3094E, which handles A4 and A5 documents.  Both
scan at variable resolutions of up to 400dpi.
