One helpful program is /usr/mmdf/bin/checkup.  It will peruse the
configuration and report all sorts of problems it sees, including bad
permissions and missing directories.  Things work much better once
checkup gives them a clean bill of heath (except one thing - checkup
wants a v7mail directory somewhere, but everything seems to work
fine without it).
