This is getting off the track, but a friend of mine (who also has perfect pitch) and I were working on a boat engine this summer, and yes, it did come in handy to know exactly when the engine was at proper idle. In fact, we helped a mechanic at our marina tune the engines on a boat that had twin engines. One was on the boat, the other was in the garage on a motor stand. We got them to within less than 100 RPM of each other without a tachometer.
