HY-PHEN-EX is a hyphenation expert that is packaged as a C language function. HY-PHEN-EX is useful in any program that formats English language text. When filling lines of text it is frequently desirable to divide a word between the end of one line and the beginning of the next. If a word is to be divided between two lines, the division may not be arbitrary. A division such as `scu-lpture' looks wrong and and is more difficult to read. Some particularly bad divisions can change the basic sense of a word, such as `therapist' becoming `the-rapist'. HY-PHEN-EX is an expert system having over 4800 rules to identify the places where a word may correctly be divided between lines. It also ranks the desirability of the places. It will suggest com-mendable as preferable to commend-able. This version of HY-PHEN-EX is for American English. HY-PHEN-EX comes with full C language source and is compatible with most C compilers. HY-PHEN-EX is distributed on MS-DOS floppy disks, but is usable in most environments that have a C compiler. HY-PHEN-EX is available for $89 from GeoMaker Software.
