What version of the operating system are you running? Sun has changed the NIT interface in a big way from version 3.5 to 4.0.x. I suspect that you are attempting to run the tcpdump executable from a 3.5 system on a 4.0.x system. If that is the case you should try to get a new version of tcpdump from someplace. If you are building the executable yourself, are you aware of a diff set to enable the sources to be compiled and usable on a Sun with SunOS4.0.x? There are a number of anonymous ftp sites with both the executables and the diff set, but I do not have them offhand. If you are really desperate I can send you the diff set only... Good Luck!
