This is probably too simple, but....

poke the column in to 1403 ($576) and call -2072 (jsr $f7e7) This assumes
Applesoft is present and switched in. From What's Where in The Apple II.p.149.
Actually, I think it might expect the column in 36 ($24) and the HTAB entry
point may have been changed in newer ROMs. The locations are from Beagle's
Peeks & Pokes. Hope it helps.
