Unlisted parts was able to find the part number on Monday (27. Nov) and transferred me to DEC Direct to place the order. I ordered 6 of these little hummers, since I have already fried two of them. DEC wants 6 bucks each. Apparently, they can't ship them for ten working days, but I can afford the wait, right? Of course, they actually shipped them the day following my order, via FedEx regular, and I had them on the 30th. I was impressed. No wonder I like this DEC stuff! +vanhorn+ Thanks for your help. --- * Origin: Horsefeathers + Burn a flag for freedom! + (Opus 1:343/30) ------------------------------ Date: 12-03-89 (10:53) To: ALL Subject: FORMATTING RAINBOW DISKS From: DAVID HEID Can anyone tell me whether I can use disks that were formatted using the public 3.10 MSDOS to copy files on now that I have 3.10b from SS? I must have a hundred discs that have backup data on that I thought I would delete the files on and I wondered if I could use them with 3.10b directly. I started to bulk erase them but I dont want to go thru the trouble of reformatting and intializing. I know this may be a very basic question but I'm still not sure about formatting and initializing and I dont know whether deleting files on a 3.10 disc doesnt touch the track that the system files are stored on. I only have a few discs that have had the system files copied to and I plan to reformat those with the format/I command before I reuse them with 3.10b. BTW, FORMAT/I won't work and is unnecessary on diskettes that have already been formatted for Rainbow DOS (any version). Use just FORMAT to get rid of old system files. --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/123 ------------------------------ Date: 12-06-89 (16:54) To: DAVID STRICKLER Subject: OF RAINBOWS AND 386S... From: GEORGE THEALL DM> DM>> DRI is Digital Research, but what is SCO? DM> DM>Thats "Santa Cruz Operation", home of Zenix. Looks pretty good from the DM>little I know about it. I think Don means Xenix. SCO sells both Xenix and Unix for 386-based machines, though these days they're putting most of their efforts behind the latter. SCO Xenix is a bit pricey in relation to other 386 unixes, but does run fine with only 2MB of RAM while its competitors require a minimum of 4! It's also well supported by third party vendors. I haven't heard much about SCO's implementation of unix - it's fairly new. If you're going the unix route, he might want to check out Everex's offering. About $800 for the unlimited user, full development system which is about half of what SCO Xenix would cost. The general concensus seems to be that their product's a bit rough around the edges but definitely a bargain if you're not looking for networking and/or X-Windows. Alas, their tech support seems to be sorely deficient and their manuals are reportedly not for unix novices. Apart from unix, you should also look at PC-MOS from the Software Link. This is a multiuser, multitasking OS "compatible with many DOS programs". George --- ~ EZ 1.23b4 #263 ~ "Facts are stupid things" - R. Reagan ------------------------------
