Setport has solved my problem it some instances, but not all. It did not help with WORDSTAR because each time I tried to print WORDSTAR's printer initialization string undid what I had done using SETPORT. ++ Amer ++ --- * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (Opus 1:343/3) ------------------------------ Date: 12-08-89 (11:38) To: ALL Subject: HARD DISK CONTROLLERS From: GEORGE TURNER I have a Rainbow with a 10-MB hard drive. The only problem is that DEC's diags don't format it, even if they did I wouldn't use it. There is a public domain program called WUTIL which formats drives on the rainbow. You are quite right on the Unix point although that is a rather new product for SCO. While talking to their rep at a dealers show here in Denver he stated that most (if not all) new development would be in the Unix product and that Xenix was being phased out. > SCO Xenix is a bit pricey in relation to other 386 unixes, but does > run fine with only 2MB of RAM while its competitors require a minimum of 4! > It's also well supported by third party vendors. Alas, their > tech support seems to be sorely deficient and their manuals are reportedly > not for unix novices. Would suggust that you be very carefull about any dealings with Everex as their support is normally marginal at best. Had to quit selling their products due to the poor support and excessive product defects. > Apart from unix, you should also look at PC-MOS from the Software > Link. This is a multiuser, multitasking OS "compatible with many DOS > programs". Used MOS for a while back in the early stages as a beta tester for them. It was a very interesting program at that time but had several bugs. Word has it that they have worked out most of the bugs so it should be a viable contender now. Don't know if the above ramblings will help anyone. Just thought I'd pass them on to you and Dave. I was using a program called LA50 to set up the printer. This program apparently does something, or perhaps does not do something, to cause the printer to not send xoff/xon properly (I believe that the problem is a buffer problem, since it always fails in the same place with the same file). I used another program, SETPORT, to set up the la50 and then everything prints out ok. --- ConfMail V3.31 * Origin: The Pot of Gold - (703-359-6549) (1:109/103) ------------------------------ Date: 12-10-89 To: MARK BORNSTEIN Subject: PRIVATE ARGUMENTS From: PAUL OLSON Mark, I'm getting tired of the argument between you and Geoff Reed. If I want to upgrade to a higher GT>capacity drive do I need a new controller as well? I hop not. No, as long as the new drive uses MFM or RLL encoding. In fact, you can buy almost any 20 or 40MB drive that's marketed for PC's and install it in your Rainbow. Just be careful that the cables from the controller card will fit the new drive. (You may need to jury-rig a new set with different pin connectors and/or a longer length.) If you're worried about specific manufacturers and drive model numbers, get a hold of the June 1988 issue of _Rainbow News_. It listed dozens of drives known to work in the Rainbow. Either that or post in this Echo a list you're considering and I'll look them up. Two words of caution. First, you will probably need a formatting program. The Winchester Utilities disk included with your 10MB will not handle the newer, higher capacity drives. I would definitely recommend you download a copy of Tony Camas' WUTIL program for this. Second, unless you're using MS-DOS v3.x you won't be able to use more than 32MB of the drive for MS-DOS. If you are, however, you'll need WUTIL v3.12 as modified by Vincenze Esser since earlier versions do *not* work with the version of MS-DOS v3.10 from Suitable Solutions.
