Here goes: Where (besides DEC) and for how much can I find an MS-DOS board (XPU) for my DECmate II. I understand they came populated with two options for amount of memory (don't know how many k). Anybody know if they are expandable? Will I need to get DEC's version of MS-DOS for the DECmate, or does the XPU make the DECmate think it's a Rainbow (in which case I could get 3.1 from Suitable Solutions)? In either case, would I be able to run Rainbow-specific or only "generic" (non-IBM, of course) MS-DOS applications? If not, is it possible there is a "Code-Blue"-like program for the DECmate? The reason I'm interested is that I have a DECmate, and we use both DECmates and PC compatibles at work (no Rainbows). I'd like to be able to transfer documents back and forth, but my federal government agency is too cheap to buy WPSPLUS-DOS (DEC) or Suitable Solutions version. There are restrictions against putting "unauthorized s/w on the PC's (yes, they check) so I can't get those myself. (Also, _I'm_ too cheap!) Any suggestions??? But to further show my ignorance, what does DH> DH> BTW mean at the beginning of one of your sentences? As I read your DH> message it tells me that all my disks are good to use with 310b and DH> that if I want to get rid of all data on the disks (including) any sys DH> files then I should use the format command in my 310b. Do you mean DH> that the format/I wont work to get rid of the sys files but I DH> should(could) use the command on new disks only? That's correct - only on new non-DEC diskettes. New DEC RX50 diskettes don't need the /I switch. There is a program called DISK (and probably others) that, among other things, shows all files on a disk or diskette and lets you unhide and unprotect the system files and delete them; faster than reformatting. BTW, "BTW" means "By the way"... --- msged 1.99L MSC * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123) ------------------------------ Date: 12-12-89 (07:40) To: CARL HOUSEMAN Subject: RE: BTW From: FRANK MALLORY > > RTFM - Read the fine manual (feel free to substitute > another adjective > for "manual" if you desire!) I'm sure you meant "fine" rather than "manual" for the substitution. I see this one quite frequently, in NEWOPUS and elsewhere; but it isn't considered polite to tell someone to RTFM in response to a plea for help. However, we see a lot of impolite things in these echoes, don'e we? :-) BTW, I have a file here (area 20) that explains a number of the symbols and abbreviations used in Fidonet; called ICONS.LST. frank.mallory@blkcat.fidonet.org (I'll be disappointed if at least ONE user doesn't ask me what the above means) --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/123 ------------------------------ Date: 12-12-89 (07:51) To: ALL Subject: SUITABLE SOLUTIONS From: FRANK MALLORY SS has announced price reductions on many of their Rainbow products (e.g., TURBOW 286 board now $495).
