Thanks to everyone who suggested how to turn off a modem's speaker.
The solution seems to be to send ATM0 to turn it off, ATM1 to turn
it back on.

One person suggested using ATVi, where i = 0, 1 or 2 to control
different levels of speaker output, but I could not get this to
work.
