It can scan an image at 100 to 400 DPI (dots per inch). Many mail order firms are selling this gadget at under $200. (Be sure to get the new "PLUS" version as it has better scanning abilities than the previous version.) There are a few other similar products out there, but I've used the logitech and was pleased with it.
