I had the same problem with the Miniscribe 3425 some years back.
According to the guy who fixed it it was the drive's electronics
which died (although they claimed to have replaced one of the
platters as well).  My advice would be to back up frequently and
be prepared to toss the drive out when it fails - from my
experience I don't think it's worth trying to get it fixed.
