I've been able to sucessfully unpack a tar archive on the Mac, but I wasn't able to uncompress the file as well. So I end up uncompressing on the VAX and running tar on the Mac. The only problems occure when the tar archive contains 2 files in the same directory that differ only in capitalization. Then program refuses to extract the second file because of a name conflict. You also get errors if there are links between files, and the error reporting isn't very good. But overall, the process has been very sucessful for me. Both programs should be available on Info-Mac.
