Get a PC-XT clone with 1 floppy drive and 256K RAM (no hard drive), preferabley 8MHz or higher. 2. Get 2 Western Digital Ethernet cards. 3. Pick up the PCroute program from either accuvax.nwu.edu (anonymous ftp) or uunet.uu.net. If you need higher throughput, you can always go with a faster PC. As far as I know, Phil Karn's KA9Q (did I get the name right?) package can also be used for routing software. At Northwestern, we used to make gateways out of hosts, but found that dedicated routers were much less hassle. And unlike a NeXT, a PC DOES boot back up after a power failure.
