I don't understand your comment "I can't get the programs I compile in XView to properly read from the fonts directory". Do you mean when you attempt to start-up your XView program it complains ("XView warning:...") that it cannot find your fonts? If this is the case, then you'll need to make sure that the fonts are really in your directory /usr/local/lib/X11/fontsFonts and that this directory is in your font path. Hope this helps.
