If someone does not want to subscribe to a group s/he is not forced to do so, equally if someone wishes to subscribe to a group s/he is not dis-allowed. There is no segregation in USENET. The same will be true for *.kids; One cannot keep out non-.kids, no matter how desirable it would be. I support Ben Feen's idea (and alt.kids-talk) and I don't think that he ever meant to exclude adults, but to have a group that was _primarily_ for .kids to use. But if I want to subscribe to *.kids, I will have to limit my traffic in that group to kid-related topics or, justifiably, be flamed to teeny-tiny miniscule cinders of ascii. I am not "making-believe" that I am a child. I am an adult...but in my heart, I am young....and I hope I never change.
