In private mail to me, somebody passed along their mom's recommendation
of an English translation of the Quran:

:The annotations are in normal english (and quite extensive), the
:translation is reminiscent of old-fashioned ("shakespearean") english,
:but that makes sense because that is the style of the original classical

:pretty good(!), but I don't know her critical evaluation of it.
