Ben,

there are two primary reasons that a feather duster can loose its head.

the reasons I have discoverd are the following:

poor water quality
being agitated by tankmates

the problem can be corrected and the feather duster will regrow its head if
the conditions that caused its loss of its head are corrected.

the feather duster will discard its head in an attempt to fool a fish into
thinking that it is dead and letting the fish eat the head while it regrows
another head.
