Masys), pat@grebyn.com (Pat Bahn) for these suggestions: American Cafe (several locations, 1 block from Friendship Heights metro, and another relatively close to Metro Center--both locations on the Red Line). American Cafe has 5-6 vegetarian entrees among a standard menu; food generally quite tasty. Bombay Palace (Indian) 1835 K St. NW near 15th 293-3073 or 331-0111. Quite good, though a bit on the expensive side. Standard Indian veggie fare. Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant, 2849 Georgia Ave. NW 332-0221 Food for Thought, 1738 Connecticut Ave. between R & S Sts, NW 797-1095, just down from the Sheraton. Cheap, very Bohemian, with a couple of veggy dishes. Katmandu (Nepalese-Kashmiri), 1800 Connecticut Ave. NW 483-6470 Madras, 3506 Connecticut Ave. (West side) 966-2541 a few steps from the CT AV Metro exit. A take-out or eat-in Indian vegetarian place. Not upscale at all. Madurai, 3318 M Street in the heart of Georgetown, 333-0997. A great vegetarian indian restaurant. Georgetown is not easily accessed by metro (you need to take a bus or walk a dozen blocks). The food is fairly inexpensive... the restaurant makes Washingtonian magazine's "best cheap eats" list every year. (it's been a while since i was there, but i would guess $7-$10 per person for an entree or combo platter.) Paru's (Indian), 2010 S Street between Connecticut Ave. & 19th St. NW 483-5133. Rajaji Curry House (Indian), Connecticut Ave. NW on Red Line at Woodley Park/Zoo stop, more-or-less right at the top of the escalator which comes up from the metro. Standard Indian veggie fare. Siddharta, 1379 K St NW at 14th St 682-9090. Not completely veggie, but Indian with good veggie dishes. I have a copy of The Vegetarian Society of the District of Columbia's `Restaurant List'. It has about 60 names and addresses on it in D.C. and nearby in Virginia and Maryland (too many to type in ;-). I'll post it with this on the bulletin board near the USENIX Registration area. A few more from the August 1989 issue of `Vegetarian Times' `The Essential Guide to Restaurants' (available from Vegetarian Times Bookshelf, PO Box 446, My.Morris, IL 61054) that aren't above or on the List: Fish, Wings, and Things (Caribbean), 2418 18th St. NW 234-0322 G.G.Flips (Indian), 915 21st St, NW 466-5567 Patrick's Good Food (Veg Grocery Store), 1825 Columbia Rd. NW 462-5150 Royal Frontier (Indian), 1823 L St. NW 785-0785 It wouldn't hurt to call any of these places before making the trip to check hours et al. enjoy -len PS: If you are driving through Bridgeport, Conn, or taking Amtrak down (get ticketed to stop there (Bloodroot is a 5 minute cab ride from the station)), then I suggest you make a lunch stop at: Bloodroot a feminist restaurant & bookstore featuring a seasonal vegetarian menu on the sound Black Rock 85 Ferris Street Bridgeport, CT 06605 203-576-9168 Lunch and Dinner: Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat. Brunch: Sunday It's a very good restaurant with fine food. And I've yet to take a non-veg there who didn't leave happy and content. enjoy -len
