The practice of multiple wives came about from the 'survival of the fittest' deal. No matter how hard a woman tries, she can only reproduce at most once every 9 months. A man, however is fertile during those 9 months and can impregnate others. Thus, the best males would have harems, increasing their contribution to the gene pool.
