Actually the Commodore VIC-20 had a twenty column display not fourty.
That higher value was available on the Commodore 64.  The VIC-20 in
many ways was a cut-rate machine.  It had 5K of RAM of which 3K was
actually usable for BASIC interpreter code.  The machine had single
joystick port, a large card edge connector, and a smaller connector
for the modem.  The larger buss could be used for either ROM
cartridges (real big things) or for RAM expansion.  A whole third
party market sprung up to make backplanes for these machines.

Unfortunately I don't have much sex to talk about.  If a female in the
Milwaukee area wants to help me out, send me some mail >:-).
