	The Monte Carlo rally opens Friday with the Italian carmaker Lancia
seeking a fourth straight victory. Strong challenges are expected from
Japanese teams of Toyota, Mazda and Mitsubishi.

	Tigers pitcher Jack Morris signed a 2-year contract worth $4.2
million. In an unusual provision, the second year of the contract will
be at the player's option, not the club's. ... The Philadelphia Phillies
signed pitcher Ken Howell, who was 12-12 with a 3.44 ERA last season, to
a three-year contract worth $4.75 million. The Phillies also signed
infielder-outfielder Randy Ready and pitcher Jason Grimsley to  one-year
contracts.

	Michael Jordan, a two-time slam dunk champion, will challenge
three-time champ Larry Bird in the 3-point shooting contest Feb. 10, the
day before the NBA All-Star Game in Miami. Kenny Walker will defend his
slam dunk title and Calvin Murphy leads a 22-player field in the
old-timers game.

	Coach Danny Ford, who led Clemson to a national title in 1981 but
came under fire for a second NCAA inquiry into the football program
within a decade, resigned. Clemson expects to name a new coach within a
week to 10 days. Candidates include Bobby Ross of Georgia Tech, John
Mackovic of Illinois, Dick Sheridan of North Carolina State and Jimmy
Satterfield of Furman. ... The Atlantic 10, faced with the loss of Penn
State to the Big Ten, is considering adding La Salle, Miami and DePaul.
The conference might expand to a 12 or 14-team league of two divisions.
... Lawrence Funderburke, who left Indiana after being kicked out of
practice by Coach Bob Knight in December, is enrolled at St. Catharine
College, a Kentucky junior college with about 250 students. He has
inquired about transferring to Kentucky or Missouri, but Indiana refuses
to release him from his letter of intent. ... Five University of Texas
football players have flunked out of school for the spring semester and
at least three freshmen players are on scholastic probation. The
academic casualties are Bo Robinson, a freshman defensive end; Paul
Moriarty, a redshirt freshman defensive tackle; Keith Cash, a junior
wide receiver; Irish Lewis, a sophomore defensive back, and Jorrick
Battle, a junior wide receiver.

	New Hampshire lawmakers rejected a plan to introduce legalized
betting on professional sports. The proposal, similar to the system
operating in Oregon, drew support from state lottery officials.

	The Commonwealth Games, featuring 3,100 athletes from 56 countries,
start in New Zealand Wednesday facing last-minute problems. The swimming
center awaits seats, the judo venue is missing part of the floor and
ticket sales are slow. Also, the Maoris are threatening protests. The
original New Zealanders contend their claims to ancestral lands have
been ignored. ... South and North Korea met but failed to reach an
accord on sending a unified Korean team to this year's Asian Games in
Beijing. South and North Korea technically are still at war.

	The $500,000 Jamaica Classic, the year's first event on the LPGA
Tour, opens Friday in Montego Bay. This marks the LPGA's 40th
anniversary tour.

	Sports columnist Hy Goldberg, 81, who earned national acclaim
during a 40-year career at the Newark (N.J.) Evening News, died
Wednesday of respiratory failure in Miami.

	Tracy Austin has filed suit, claiming a car accident in Short
Hills, N.J., may have ended her tennis career. Austin, 26, suffered a
broken leg when the car she was driving was struck by a van.
                         _T_r_a_c_k_ _a_n_d_ _F_i_e_l_d
	Abdi Bile of Somalia and Paula Ivan of Romania will compete in
Friday night's mile in the Sunkist Invitational in Los Angeles. A
$100,000 bonus goes to the male or female breaking the indoor mile
record. ... Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who equaled the world indoor record
for the 55-meter hurdles at last year's Millrose Games, will defend her
title at this year's meet Feb. 2.
